There are many different reasons why to choose a Winter Elopement. A big one, in my opinion, is if you like winter sports such as Skiing, Snowboarding, Horse Sleigh rides, Snow Shoeing, Ice caves… and etc!

Best Winter Elopement Locations in Colorado

Colorado has no shortage of breathtaking winter backdrops, and the hardest part is honestly choosing just one.

Mountain passes are some of the most stunning places to elope in winter. With sweeping views, untouched snow, and that classic Colorado alpine feel, they make your ceremony look straight out of a postcard. Just keep in mind that some passes close seasonally or require 4WD access. (Loveland Pass is one of my favorite locations)
Our national parks and forest areas also become unbelievably peaceful in the winter months. Popular spots that are usually busy in peak season suddenly feel quiet and intimate—perfect for a private ceremony surrounded by snowy trees and rugged mountain peaks. (Rocky Mountain National Park feels so peaceful and quiet, it is perfect)

As a Colorado native, I know how scary and honestly, sometimes traumatizing driving in the snow can be. Winter elopements are magical, but they also require a little extra preparation to make sure your day is safe, smooth, and stress-free.

First and foremost:

Winter driving is no joke. Having a reliable 4WD or AWD vehicle is essential for accessing many mountain locations safely. Roads can get icy quickly, and storms can roll in out of nowhere, so it’s always better to be over-prepared than underprepared.
Basic emergency gear Like blankets, tire chains, a thermos with something warm, extra gloves, and snacks is highly recommended
Knowing how to avoid frostbite and keep your body heat upmakes the experience much more enjoyable. Layering smartly, using hand warmers, and bringing a warm jacket you can slip on between shots makes a huge difference. Especially at higher elevations.
don’t forget sun protection, even in winter! Snow reflects sunlight, which can lead to sunburn faster than you’d expect. Sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and sunglasses will help keep you comfortable throughout the day.
Lastly, flexibility is key. Clear communication and having a backup plan allows us to pivot if a storm rolls in, a road closes, or conditions change. Winter in Colorado is unpredictable, but with the right mindset and preparation, it becomes part of the adventure instead of a stressor
