Introduction

Winter elopements are quickly becoming one of the most magical and underrated ways to say “I do.” Colorado has always been a popular spot for winter vacations because of skiing and snowboarding, but it’s still an overlooked season to elope. Snow-covered mountains, quiet trails, soft golden light, and cozy cabins make it the perfect time for adventurous couples who want privacy and stunning scenery.

As a Colorado native, I can confidently say that winter here is one of the best seasons to experience. My husband and I even got married on a cold December day, and I wouldn’t change a single thing about it.

With the right planning, winter can be one of the most beautiful ways to elope. If you’re dreaming of warm blankets, hot chocolate, and stunning photos you’ll never forget, this guide will help you plan the perfect winter elopement from start to finish.

Why Choose a Winter Elopement in Colorado?

There are many different reasons why to choose a Winter Elopement. A big one, in my opinion, is if you like winter sports such as Skiing, Snowboarding, Horse Sleigh rides, Snow Shoeing, Ice caves… and etc!

Additionally, another huge perk of eloping in winter is the privacy. Trails that are packed during summer and fall become quiet and calm, giving you the space to fully soak in the moment without crowds or distractions. It truly feels like you get the mountains all to yourselves.

Winter also brings the most beautiful lighting. Soft winter sun, alpenglow sunsets, and the way fresh snow sparkles make for photos that feel crisp, romantic, and absolutely breathtaking. There’s something about that subtle golden light against white snow that feels almost cinematic.

And of course, winter comes with a naturally cozy atmosphere—think warm cabins, twinkle lights, fireplaces, blankets, and hot drinks. It sets the tone for a day that feels intimate, slow, and incredibly meaningful.

Plus, winter can be a great time for budget-friendly choices. Some vendors and lodging options offer off-season pricing, which means you can stretch your budget further or splurge on the things that matter most to you.

Best Winter Elopement Locations in Colorado

Colorado has no shortage of breathtaking winter backdrops, and the hardest part is honestly choosing just one.

  • Mountain passes are some of the most stunning places to elope in winter. With sweeping views, untouched snow, and that classic Colorado alpine feel, they make your ceremony look straight out of a postcard. Just keep in mind that some passes close seasonally or require 4WD access. (Loveland Pass is one of my favorite locations)
  • Our national parks and forest areas also become unbelievably peaceful in the winter months. Popular spots that are usually busy in peak season suddenly feel quiet and intimate—perfect for a private ceremony surrounded by snowy trees and rugged mountain peaks.                                          (Rocky Mountain National Park feels so peaceful and quiet, it is perfect)
  • Ski towns and alpine lakes are another dreamy option. Towns like Breckenridge, Vail, Telluride, and Crested Butte offer charming downtowns, gorgeous viewpoints, and easy access to high-elevation winter scenery.

Remote cabins or mountain lodges make for an unforgettable winter escape. You can elope right outside your cabin among fresh snow, warm up by the fire, and spend your day soaking in the peaceful mountain atmosphere. Below are some links to some amazing airbnb locations I found:

Weather Expectations: What Winter Actually Looks Like in Colorado

Winter in Colorado is absolutely stunning but it definitely has a personality of its own. Knowing what to expect (and how to prepare for it) can make your day run so much smoother and help you actually enjoy all the magic winter brings.

Cold temperatures and wind chill are a big part of the season, especially at higher elevations. It’s completely doable with the right layers, but it’s important to plan for breaks to warm up, hand warmers, and cozy pieces you can easily throw on between photos.

You will also be working with early sunsets and shorter daylight hours because of the season. Winter light is gorgeous, but it doesn’t last long.. Earlier ceremonies or flexible timelines help us take full advantage of that soft golden glow before the sun dips behind the mountains.

Snowstorms are always a possibility. No snow is also a possibility (Thanks global warming). It is very important to be prepared with backup locations, warm layers, and vehicles that can handle snowy conditions.

Winter in Colorado is unpredictable, but that’s part of what makes it so special. With a little flexibility and the right gear, you can fully enjoy whatever nature decides to give you that day.

Snowshoeing or cross-country skiing are perfect for couples who want to explore a little deeper into the quiet winter landscape. It’s a peaceful way to experience the mountains and makes for some beautiful, candid photos along the trail.

If you’re looking for something more nostalgic and lighthearted, ice skating is such a sweet addition. Whether it’s a small frozen lake or a local outdoor rink, skating gives you those fun, romantic moments you’ll remember forever.

You can also keep things simple and dreamy with a hot chocolate or mulled wine toast. Warm drinks, cozy mugs, and snowy views make for the perfect winter celebration moment.

For couples who love the slower, intimate moments, cabin snuggling photos are a must. Think blankets, fireplaces, soft light, and that cozy “just married” feeling.

And if you want to bring out your playful side, a snowball fight or building a tiny snowman is always a hit. It adds personality to your day and brings out genuine laughter and connection.I am an avid skier myself, and I would be ecstatic to join you on the mountain and get those portraits for you! Safety & Comfort Tips on your Colorado Elopement

As a Colorado native, I know how scary and honestly, sometimes traumatizing driving in the snow can be. Winter elopements are magical, but they also require a little extra preparation to make sure your day is safe, smooth, and stress-free.

First and foremost:

  • Winter driving is no joke. Having a reliable 4WD or AWD vehicle is essential for accessing many mountain locations safely. Roads can get icy quickly, and storms can roll in out of nowhere, so it’s always better to be over-prepared than underprepared.
  • Basic emergency gear Like blankets, tire chains, a thermos with something warm, extra gloves, and snacks is highly recommended
  • Knowing how to avoid frostbite and keep your body heat upmakes the experience much more enjoyable. Layering smartly, using hand warmers, and bringing a warm jacket you can slip on between shots makes a huge difference. Especially at higher elevations.
  • don’t forget sun protection, even in winter! Snow reflects sunlight, which can lead to sunburn faster than you’d expect. Sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and sunglasses will help keep you comfortable throughout the day.
  • Lastly, flexibility is key. Clear communication and having a backup plan allows us to pivot if a storm rolls in, a road closes, or conditions change. Winter in Colorado is unpredictable, but with the right mindset and preparation, it becomes part of the adventure instead of a stressor
